Pen-y Ghent, reached from Horton or Ribblehead.

Nine Standards, at the end of Mallerstang Edge. Reached from Garsdale or Kirkby Stephen. Very atmospheric if the weather allows you to see them! A venue mainly for strenuous walks.

Top Withins from Pennine Way, visited on Calderdale walks and members’ walks on Thursdays.

About Members Events

FDR has a history and culture of additional events including coach excursions, weekend short breaks and week long holidays for members, which run in addition to our core train walks programme . These date back to when our organisation was founded in 1980 and the DalesRail fully integrated town and bus service, operated only on summer weekends once a month. These were to hold the membership together and provide the opportunity for collective walking as a group. Coach excursions were scheduled as once per month events in winter and in the summer, once per month on a weekend when DalesRail did not operate.

When the Settle/Carlisle line was finally reprieved from closure in 1989 and a regular year round passenger service was established, we saw no reason why activities which had given so much pleasure to members and had transported them to areas not accessible by train, should be suspended. The programme of events was merely adjusted to avoid a clash of activities. Regretfully, for administrative and logistical purposes, these elements of our events have to be restricted to members of the organisation.

The coach trips ceased in 2016, however we continue to provide additional events via our year round programme of members' Thursday walks once a month (most of which can be accessed via public transport) and our Lake District walks, which run monthly from April to October.

The weekend and longer holiday trips use either hotel or youth hostel accommodation and have previously included visits to Scotland, Wales and Ireland. There will normally be at least three grades of walk put on each day. Details of future trips can be found in the Holidays section.

Our other forthcoming walks and activities are listed below - you can find details of previous trips in the Past Events section.
